Leave a gift of sight that will live on after you

By leaving a gift in your Will, you can save the sight of older people beyond your lifetime.

A gift in your Will to Macular Degeneration New Zealand means you will help older people save their sight, beyond your lifetime.

You will be joining other kind-hearted Kiwis who want to make sure nobody goes blind from treatable macular degeneration.

Whatever the size, your gift will help keep this vital work going to meet the growing need in the years to come.

When today's youth become older people, they will have the knowledge to prevent blindness and keep living well as they age.

Mark included a gift in his Will to Macular Degeneration NZ

“We should leave what we can to help others.

Macular degeneration is an insidious condition. I have seen the effects in my own family. People need to be more aware of the disease.

I know my bequest will help Macular Degeneration New Zealand do their amazing work for awareness, testing, early detection and treatment that will ultimately improve the lives of hundreds, maybe thousands of people.

I have come to understand how important their work is and how much work there still is to do. For those contemplating a bequest, it is easy to do. And, it is comforting to know that one day my final gift will help many.”

Anne included a gift in her Will to Macular Degeneration NZ

Anne and some of her family members live with macular degeneration as the disease can be hereditary. Anne wants to ensure the best possible eye health for her family’s future generations as well as other people at-risk beyond her lifetime.

Anne believes strongly in helping and comforting other people in need. She visits older people in rest homes and people who are unwell, spending quality time with them. Anne even brings them picnics and books to share.

Anne also believes in leading by example, saying, “If helping other people, who are in need, can rub off on other people, then they will start thinking, if she can do that, why can’t I?”

How will a gift in your Will save sight beyond your lifetime?

Spreading Awareness and Education

  • Making people aware and informed about early detection, timely treatments and caring for eye health so they can prevent blindness. Right now, older people are going blind because they're unaware of macular degeneration until it's too late.

  • Keeping New Zealanders up to date on the latest research around new treatments and potential cures.

Supporting People Living with Vision Loss

  • Providing them with support, warmth, compassion, vital knowledge and helpful referrals so they can preserve their quality of life and live well in old age.

Not all gifts in Wills are alike. There are different types, such as:

Percentage Bequest

  • The most effective type of gift in a Will. It allows you to decide what proportion of your estate you would like to give as your gift. It makes sure the value of your gift is not eaten away over time by inflation. Rather, it grows along with the value of your estate.

Residual Bequest

  • The remainder of your estate after you have made provision for your loved ones. This also keeps up with inflation.

Pecuniary Bequest

  • A specified sum of money in your Will.

Specified Bequest

  • Where a particular item is specified in your Will. For example, works of art, stocks, shares or property.

Official wording suggestions for including a gift in your Will
